CLASS OF 2017

We are a group of emerging artists studying BA Sculpture at The University of Brighton. We represent a growing collective of sculptors and installation artists in East Sussex, with many of us exhibiting regularly as part of the local arts scene, and also frequently in London. We are a group of 19 students working in a vast range of materials from video and installation to performance and metal work. As a group we identify ourselves as hard-working and proficient builders, continuously coming up with artistic concepts that challenge the existing contemporary arts scene. We work in a studio environment where we are encouraged to build our spaces, from putting up walls, making our desks and any accompanying furniture, this form of practice has trained us to be very hands on, teaching us to be confident in solving our own problems.

This is now our final year, and the countdown to our degree show has now started, with the private view being at the start of June 2017. We are incredibly excited for our final pieces to be shown, as they stand to mark a very important time in our lives. The degree show may well mark the end of an era, but for many of us it is the start to our futures as practising artists. We have been working efficiently day and night to develop and build our final works, working with technicians, tutors and external artists to make to the best of our abilities. For the past three years we have been fundraising in leu of the approaching degree show, so far we have hosted a pantomime, a club night and countless clothes and bake sales, and now we have set up a kickstarter for the final push. Our budget has been arranged in order to pay for the building costs of transforming our studios into a gallery space, as well as provide lunches for our essential team of volunteers and lastly to pay for our show catalogue. The catalogue is of utmost importance as it is a showcase of our works in the form of a group show, these catalogues are what we will carry through our professional lives, representing The University of Brighton in the process.
